The School: Pt. 6
by Simon Guerrier
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is a very traditional Sapphire and Steel story in its basic setup: Sapphire and Steel arrive at an old school. Strange things are happening, things that seem to be feeding off the residual hopes, dreams, fears, and disappointments of generations of students. And of course, Sapphire and Steel have to get to the bottom of what's going on and stop it.
What sets this story a notch above the typical Sapphire and Steel story is the way it catches the listener (and Sapphire and Steel) by surprise. More than once you discover that what you thought was going on isn't quite what was going on, but the surprises are hinted at just enough that you never feel like the writer is cheating by suddenly springing a new twist on you.
And there's a thoroughly amusing sequence where Sapphire and Steel are transformed into adolescent (or maybe pre-adolescent) schoolkids themselves. It certainly gives David Warner and Susannah Harker an opportunity to show a different side of their characters than usual. View all my reviews >>
