Moments from a 6-year-old's birthday party
9th-Jul-2013 10:32 pm
1. Older Nephew demonstrates that he knows how to flatter me: "You're a strong girl. Can you help me with this?"

2. The moment when you've distracted Younger Nephew from asking every twenty seconds if it's time for cake yet by letting him play Bejeweled on your phone, and then you realize that you may have replaced the problem of how to get Younger Nephew to allow the adults to eat their dinner in peace with the problem of how to get your smartphone back out of Younger Nephew's clutches. Fortunately, he eventually got bored and handed the phone to his older brother, who handed it back to me. (I was actually impressed with how long Younger Nephew lasted with it - Bejeweled is probably a bit advanced for a 4 year old.)

3. Youngest Niece has somehow gone from just barely walking to toddling along at speed, and will cheerfully grab me by the hand and tow me along on walks around the back yard, the front yard, along the sidewalk, etc.

1) Keep that up, Older Nephew. It will serve you in good stead and strike people as more original than, "You're preeeeetty."

3) I love that age.

It is a great age - lots of my friends have kids who are around that age right now, and they're adorable.

The delightful twins who are the progeny of pantryslut and her lads are coming up towards 5. One of them has been playing Bejeweled on abostick59's phone for some time. And yes, getting the phone out of her clutches would be a challenge if her mother wasn't a pretty strict disciplinarian.

It always amazes me how quickly young kids take to iPhones, iPads, and similar devices. I just keep thinking, "When I was your age, I had to learn how to read before I could play games on my dad's computer!"

When I was four years old, my dad didn't have a computer.

Good point - I don't think we got one until I was five or six, and that was only because my father programmed for a living. And it had less memory/processing power than my iPhone does now.

"and will cheerfully grab me by the hand and tow me along on walks around the back yard, the front yard, along the sidewalk, etc."

...down the street, across the bridge, the Moon, Oz, etc.
